We are looking for a dedicated, resilient, and values-driven Specialist Support Worker to join our team across two highly rewarding support packages based in Blakelaw, Newcastle and Crawcrook, Gateshead.

This unique cross-working opportunity offers staff the chance to support two very different individuals, creating varied, meaningful, and rewarding working days while also providing greater consistency of hours and long-term development opportunities.

Both roles require patience, emotional resilience, a positive sense of humour, and the ability to build strong, trusting relationships. In return, you will become part of two supportive, experienced teams where your input genuinely makes a difference to someone’s quality of life.

About the People We Support:

Blakelaw, Newcastle – Supporting a Gentleman with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

You’ll be supporting a proud Geordie lad and lifelong Newcastle United fan who lives with an acquired brain injury and restricted vision. He requires support with all areas of daily living, including moving and handling, nursing tasks, and personal care.

Support is always delivered on a 2:1 basis, meaning you will always work alongside another experienced member of the team.

He enjoys football, community outings, chatting about anything NUFC-related, and has a real love for animals. Staff who do well in this role are informal, reliable, down to earth, and enjoy building genuine rapport.

At times, his ABI can present challenges including confusion, frustration, paranoia, repetition, and behaviours that may occasionally challenge. His aphasia can make communication difficult, which can understandably become frustrating for him. This role therefore requires someone who can remain calm, patient, and consistent even during difficult moments.

Despite the challenges, this is an incredibly rewarding package where strong, long-term relationships are built. Several members of his team have supported him for over 10 years — something that speaks volumes about the connections formed within this role.

Crawcrook, Gateshead – Supporting a Young Man with Autism

You will also support an intelligent, creative, and humorous 18-year-old young man with autism who lives independently within his own home.

He is currently studying Functional Skills in Maths and English at college and has a real passion for creative writing, poetry, comedy, and scriptwriting. He enjoys DVDs, stand-up comedy, impersonations, and sharing humour with those around him.

Your role will focus on helping him develop independent living skills, maintain structure and routine, work towards Occupational Therapy goals, and build confidence in the community. You will also support him to explore his creative interests and continue developing emotionally and socially.

He has hypermobility which can impact mobility and fatigue levels, therefore applicants who drive are strongly encouraged to apply.

At times, his autism and mental health can present challenges, including emotional dysregulation, verbal threats, or self-harming behaviours. Full Positive Behaviour Support (PBS/PMVA) training will be provided, and we are committed to ensuring staff feel confident and supported in their approach.

This role is ideal for someone who understands that progress is not always linear, but who can remain encouraging, calm, and solution-focused while celebrating the smaller milestones that make a big difference over time.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking people who are:

  • Compassionate, patient, and emotionally resilient
Calm under pressure and able to maintain professional boundaries

Flexible and open to working across both services
Keen to learn and develop within specialist support environments
Experience within autism, ABI, mental health, or complex behaviour support is beneficial, but full specialist training will be provided for the right individuals.
